Nearest and Dearest was a sitcom staring Jimmy Jewel and Hylda Baker as siblings Eli and Nellie Pledge. After the death of their father they inherit his pickiling business which they try to run the business together. Eli is very much a drinker and a womaniser while his sister Nellie trys to be prim and proper except on the ocassions where she is getting some male attention. The differences between the two siblings meant they were often bickering (this was mirrored in real life between the two actors who hated one another).
The show is set in Colne in Lincolnshire and has a very northern feel to it. Other major charactors are their cousil Lily and her much older pensioner husband Walter (who does not say anything and has a bladder problem) as well as Stan who was one of the workers in the factory)
The show was made by Granada Television and ran for seven series. A sort-of spin-off was created by London Weekend Television called Not On Your Nellie which started Baker as another charactor called Nellie, very similar to her charactor on Nearest and Dearest athough this time she was running a London pub.
